Our Story
Founded in July 2007, Demasokhi is a performing arts organisation based in South East London. The word De-masokhi is derived from the Soso language from the West African region. It is a combination of two words. De which means "a child" and Masokhi means "to help nurture"; Hence De-Masokhi means "to help nurture a child".
De-Masokhi was borne out of the need to provide activities and facilities which will serve as an educational, cultural and social welfare resource for children and young people (aged 5-25 years) and their families. These activities are designed to help keep them engaged and occupied in a positive and meaningful way. Creating a platform of opportunities for them to learn new skills, develop and increase their confidence and creativity, helping to boost their self esteem and reducing the risk and or potential of them getting involved in or becoming victims of crime, violence, anti social behaviour, drugs, etc. Therefore it is our aim that our activities will help reduce the number of children and young people who are underachieving or becoming involved or victims of crime by staying safe and making a positive contribution in their communities.
Our Mission
- To embrace every child and young person by supporting, encouraging, and inspiring them to achieve their full potential.
- To engage and involve children and young people in positive and effective educational and social activities.
- Supply children and young people with the knowledge and skills necessary to develop and increase their confidence and improve their self–esteem.
- Provide a platform where they can express themselves which will further inspire them to achieve and succeed in their life goals.
- To promote and foster cultural diversity, history and awareness
- De-Masokhi aims to highlight the exceptional achievements and talents of young people through our certification and award ceremonies. Our aim is to inspire them in their vision, potentials and abilities to succeed in their various aspirations.
Our Plans
To provide the right facilities that would enable young people to engage in activities that would nurture and develop them educationally, culturally and socially.
- To provide the right facilities that would enable young people to engage in activities that would nurture and develop them educationally, culturally and socially.
- It is our aim to develop De-Masokhi into a Performing and Creative Arts Academy. We hope to work alongside education departments with the aim to include some of our activities as part of their curriculum.
- We aim to collaborate and establish links with different community groups and/or agencies to achieve these objectives. Using these activities as a tool to learning, De-masokhi aims to promote academic achievement and growth through performing arts and creative activities. The young people would have the opportunity to gain formal accreditation in Gold, Bronze or Silver through our Arts Awards Program.
- We aim to extend De-Masokhi activities to children and young people in other boroughs in the UK.
- To set up an after- School and Home Study Club. We believe a successful program would help boost the academic prowess of our young people and give them a better foundation in life. Trained and experienced teachers will be hired to facilitate these lessons.
- We plan to run classes in indigenous languages such as Krio, Spoken in Sierra Leone, Yoruba spoken in Nigeria and Swahili spoken in East Africa.
- To work as NGO in oversea countries like Africa to help the less fortunate through provision educational support and training.
- To establish projects which would help children and young people in deprived countries through scholarship to achieve and succeed in life through education, training and skills development.
- To set up an orphanage programme to provide care, support, and stability in the lives of children and young people.
